Magnetic catches can be found on many high quality cabinets. They are an important part of making sure that your cabinets remain whole and intact for years. But some people ask: why do you need them?

What is a magnetic catch?

Magnetic catches are designed to grab, or 'catch', your cabinet door and hold it closed. For an offset cabinet, this is not something that's particularly important, as the door rests atop the frame and the stile when it's closed. But for an inset cabinet, a magnetic door catch is important because it stops the hinges from over-rotating and potentially causing damage to the door and the frame of your expensive kitchen.

There are many different types of magnetic catches. Cliffside specializes in the round magnetic catch, a barrel-shaped device that attaches to the cabinet box or floor. It has a corresponding strike plate that is attached to the cabinet door. Our magnetic door catches are also depth adjustable; since wood is flexible and can swell or contract with humidity, it's important that your magnetic catches be adjustable, lest warping render them useless in the heat of summer or the cold dryness of winter.

In addition, a magnetic catch can also help if you have two facing doors with no stile between them. For example, some customer choose to uses cupboard latches on facing inset doors. Magnetic catches are essential to this operation because, without a stile, there is no place to put the 'strike', or receiving portion, of the latch. Therefore, the strike has to be attached to one of the cabinet doors. This means that the latch will not actually hold the cabinet closed; this is where a magnetic door catch comes in. Keep your cabinets safe and secure by choosing top quality magnetic catches from Cliffside.
