  • What is the difference between a mortise and non-mortise (NM) Hinge?
  • Answer:
If you are using a non-mortise (BH2A-NM) hinge, it means you are not cutting into the door or frame. If you are using a mortise hinge (BH2A and BH3NA), you will need to cut into the door to install the hinge.

Use a Cliffside 3/8" offset or AHO hinge.

  • What is Aluminum?
  • Answer:
Aluminum is an abundant metallic chemical. It has a property of extreme malleability with metals like tin and lead. Aluminum is silvery white and extremely lightweight. The element blends readily to make lightweight but very strong alloys.
  • What is Brass?
  • Answer:
Brass is approximately 67% copper and 33% zinc making it stronger and more durable than copper. Alloys with less zinc start to turn reddish in color. Commercial brass is lacquered to resist corrosion.
  • What is Bronze?
  • Answer:
Bronze is a metal alloy produced by blending copper and tin. It can contain between 2% and 20% tin. It is a sturdy, durable metal and is much harder than brass. The resonance of bronze makes it ideal. Bronze has a natural patina that forms on it turning the bronze a dark, dull color and provides a protective layer preventing oxidation below the surface of the bronze. Most bronze is coated with a thin layer of lacquer to protect the metal and the patina. Bronze looks its best when it's minimally treated.
  • What is Copper?
  • Answer:
Copper is a reddish brown nonferrous mineral. The metal is closely related with silver and gold, is highly ductile, meaning that it can be easily worked and shaped and is easy to alloy. Copper is also relatively corrosion resistant since it forms a patina which resists oxidation.
  • What is Die Cast?
  • Answer:
The die cast items have a zinc base and the finish is plated.
  • What is Stainless Steel?
  • Answer:
Stainless steel is a number of different steels used primarily for their anti-corrosive element. Stainless steel was developed to resist a number of corrosive environments. It is also an earth friendly material: it can be melted down and recycled. Stainless steel is made using chromium, nickel, and nitrogen. The minimum amount of chromium used is 10.5%. It is chromium that makes the steel stainless. Chromium improves the corrosion resistance by forming a chromium oxide film on the steel. It can also be self-repairing. Stainless steel is both strong and flexible, is a very versatile material, has a significantly longer lifespan than products made of other materials and has less maintenance costs.
  • What is Pewter?
  • Answer:
Pewter is an alloyed metal made primarily from tin with small components of lead and copper. Most pewter is 63% to 90% tin. The other metals are used as hardeners. Pewter is highly tarnish resistant and forms a protective patina with age. In color, pewter starts out glossy and bright, almost like silver. Over time the metal oxidizes and acquires a grayish tint. The metal is highly ductile, meaning that it can easily be worked, embossed or carved and is malleable. Pewter is susceptible to damage by acids like vinegar and lemon juice and should not be exposed to extreme heat.
  • What is Tin?
  • Answer:
Tin is a silvery-gray metallic element. It is alloyed with copper to make bronze. Tin hardens copper when the metals are blended. The highly corrosion resistant metal is an excellent choice for coating and for making alloys with other metals. The metal is relatively easy to work with, is highly pliable and fluid when molten. A thin coating of tin is usually added to prevent corrosion.
  • What is Zinc?
  • Answer:
Zinc is a bluish white, lustrous metal. When it is heated it becomes soft, malleable, and easily worked. Zinc makes other metals such as bronze stronger and sometimes easier to work.
  • What is the difference between Steel and Stainless Steel?
  • Answer:
Stainless steel is a specific type of steel that is alloyed with chromium to make it stainless. The non-stainless steel used in some Cliffside hardware is called 'carbon steel.' In general, carbon steel is not as resistant to corrosion as stainless steel.
  • What materials are used in high quality decorative hardware?
  • Answer:
High quality hardware is solid and made of brass, bronze, copper, pewter, stainless steel, crystal, iron and marble.
  • What materials are used in standard quality decorative hardware?
  • Answer:
Quality hardware is made of zinc die-cast, aluminum, steel, wood, plastic, acrylic, glass, ceramic and porcelain and can be hollow in the center. Zinc die cast and aluminum are generally plated with either brass, bronze or copper.
  • Why solid high quality materials like Crystal, Brass, Bronze, Iron, Pewter and Stainless Steel hardware? Is it worth the price?
  • Answer:
High quality hardware has a natural finish that often forms its own natural patina or protective coating that is up to 3 times as durable in salt spray tests as quality hardware. High quality hardware being solid is also heavier sometimes double the weight of comparably sized standard quality hardware. The average retail sales price difference is 20%.
  • Can you be allergic to nickel?
  • Answer:
Nickel is used as a primary chemical throughout the plating process and used to color the hardware. For customers with allergies to nickel, the following finishes should be safe: Iron, Antique Brass and Oil Rubbed Bronze.
  • I have a home near the ocean; what type of hardware is best suited for this climate?
  • Answer:
